Caption 6: Caring about students' social development is so important. But why?
It's simple really. Social skills are really valuable. They help kids talk to their friends, interact with their teachers and respect their peers. There's no better time than childhood to learn how to develop social skills.
In our Leap 'N Learn based classes, social development can look like:

Caption 7: It's easy to assume our students are comfortable, willing, or confident to participate in class but this really isn't always the case.
An easy way for us to build agency and consent with our preschool classes is to ask whether they would like to engage, go first, or demonstrate.
Especially for our younger students, we frame our question so they know it's totally acceptable to deny our request. For example: "I really loved how you followed your feathers with your eyes, Clara. Would you like to show everyone how you did that? You can say yes, or you can say no".
The last part is super important because it identifies that, as teachers, we hold more power in the classroom. It explicitly tells students that it's ok to say no, that there's no "preferred" answer, and it's their choice... and that is what consent is all about!
It's a little act with a big impact. 🌱

Caption 8: Let's talk about dispositions and attitudes in the classroom. We aim to cultivate more than just dance skills in our students – we focus on building things like respect, motivation, dedication, compassion, empathy.
But these are pretty lofty, high-level terms... I mean, to a 5 or 6 year old, what does empathy mean?
We can help teach these concepts by unpacking them. What does empathy look like in this situation. What does it sound like? What would it feel like?
With a Leap 'N Learn approach, we unpack things so that we can reveal their component parts, which leads to more explicit teaching... and that is super powerful.
So when our teachers are in a situation in which their expectations aren't being met, we remember to clearly express what students could be doing, seeing, thinking, and feeling.
